Tinovul Mare Poiana Stampei is Romania’s largest natural peat bog nature reserve and covers 675.11 hectares, including its protection zone. The Natura 2000 site comprises active peat bogs and peat bogs with forest vegetation. The designation of ROSCI0247 Tinovul Mare Poiana Stampei as a Natura 2000 site serves to protect six species and three habitats of community interest, including two priority habitats.

Hiking

The Tinovul Mare themed trail is an easy, linear hiking trail approximately 800 metres long in the Tinovul Mare nature reserve in Poiana Stampei. It crosses the peat bog on a wooden footbridge. The trail starts at one of two possible starting points: at the entrance to the Tinovul Mare nature reserve and at Cabana Poiana Izvoarelor. Information boards and trail markers identify it. Poiana Stampei is located on National Road 17 between Vatra Dornei and Bistrița. The locality has a visitor information point for Călimani National Park, where rangers provide information about tourism and the park’s biodiversity. Casa Muzeu was established to preserve the history of Poiana Stampei as a living heritage and displays a traditional home interior with a hearth, veranda, cupboard for dishes and other household objects. “Sfânta Seară de Crăciun” is a local tradition in Poiana Stampei that has existed for more than two decades and is intended to bring locals and tourists together at a celebration with Christmas carols and communal gathering.

Joia Mare includes a traditional market with fasting and Easter specialities such as pască, cozonac, lamb, eggs, drob and afinată. At Casa de Cultură Poiana Stampei, Joia Mare also includes a gastronomic sales exhibition and workshops on decorating Easter eggs.
