Suhaia: Balta Suhaia, Nature and Via Danubiana

Suhaia combines a significant remnant of the former Danube floodplain with the ROSPA0102 Suhaia protected area. This area has the status of both a Natura 2000 site and a Ramsar site; as a result, nature-related landscapes and an expressly designated protected status come together in Suhaia.

Nature

Balta Suhaia is a created floodplain lake in the left-bank section of the Danube floodplain in Teleorman County. The lake is also part of the landscape context of the former floodplain, whose remnants are essential for the geographical classification of Suhaia.

The Călmățui Delta forms where the Călmățui River flows into Lake Suhaia. This means that, alongside the lake itself, the mouth of a river can also be identified as a distinct natural feature of the area.

The potential area for the ecological restoration of Suhaia covers 1,063 ha along the Danube in Teleorman County. This figure describes a large-scale section along the river and therefore differs from the specific water and river-mouth features around the lake.
