Zimnicea between the Danube Terrace, Floodplains and History

Among Zimnicea’s historical and scenic points of reference is the archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Zimnicea - Cetate”. It is located on a promontory of the high Danube Terrace west of the present-day town and east of the Pasărea River.

Nature

East of Zimnicea, the “Vedea-Dunăre” protected area extends through the lower Danube floodplain at the confluence of the Vedea and Danube rivers. The islands “Insula Cinghile”, “Ostrov Vardim”, “Ostrov Malak Vardim” and “Ostrovul Gâsca” are also located in the vicinity of Zimnicea.

Riverside and Leisure

For the paid leisure trips operated by the passenger ship “Valul Dunărean”, trips are available from April to October on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays upon request or reservation. Passengers board and disembark for this activity exclusively at the specially established pontoon in the port of Zimnicea.

The riverside promenade in Zimnicea is used as a walking route. History

The “Situl Cetate de la Zimnicea” area comprises three settlement layers from the Getic La Tène period and a medieval settlement. Another historic structure is the “Gara Zimnicea” railway station, which was built in 1901 from Ciurea bricks as a single-storey building and consists of a projecting central section and two side wings.

The railway branch line from Roșiori via Alexandria and Smârdioasa to Zimnicea began operating as far as Zimnicea on 1 July 1901.
