Teleorman is a plain crossed by waterways. The Danube and its floodplain are considered Teleorman’s main tourist attraction. The natural lakes in Teleorman include Suhaia, Baldovineşti, and Belciug.

The tourist Danube area includes the branches Dunărica and Pasărea, as well as Lakes Suhaia and Fățana, and offers opportunities for sport fishing.

Culture and History

The Teleorman County Museum has archaeological collections, particularly from the Neolithic and Geto-Dacian periods, and presents a permanent regional ethnographic collection. The museum can be visited with at least one day’s advance notice.

The Zimnicea Cetate archaeological site is located on a promontory of the elevated Danube terrace west of the present-day city of Zimnicea.

The restored medieval Turnu Fortress in Turnu Măgurele dates from the 14th century, is located near the confluence of the Olt and Danube rivers, and can be visited.

The Gurban tradition, a celebration in honor of Saint Martyr Tryphon, the patron saint of vineyards and wine, is observed in Licuriciu–Călinești and Izvoarele on February 1. The Căluș tradition was revived in Năsturelu and Calomfirești. The cultural program in Teleorman also includes the “Marin Preda” National Literature Festival.
