Giroc: Culture, Festivals and Landscape

Culture and History

The Orthodox Church of “Sfântul Dimitrie” in Giroc was built in 1759. It is a single-nave hall church in a simplified Baroque style. The church’s iconostasis was made in 1763 and restored in 1922.

The monument to the Giroc heroes who fell in the First World War was erected in 1927 to honor 82 young men from the village. Another historical memorial is the Aurel Vlaicu Monument: it was erected in 1914, shortly after the fatal accident involving aviation pioneer Aurel Vlaicu.

Festivals and Cultural Life

Ruga Giroc takes place on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. The “În glas de toacă” Culture and Spirituality Festival reached its twelfth edition in 2019 and took place in the courtyard of the Orthodox Church of “Sfântul Dimitrie” in Giroc.
