Discover Ghiroda: Nature, History and Festivals

Pădurea Bistra is a protected forest area covering 19.9 hectares and is located in the southeast of the municipality of Ghiroda. Balta cu Nuferi is on the way to Pădurea Bistra. The Bega floodplain in Ghiroda features meanders and oxbow lakes with still water. Sport and recreational fishing activities are organised at Pescotim S.A. Ghiroda therefore brings together a protected forest area, a landscape with still waters and organised fishing activities as distinct nature-related themes.

The “Monument al eroilor căzuți în Primul Război Mondial” in Ghiroda dates from 1924. The inscription on the monument commemorates those from the municipality of Ghiroda who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918. In addition, traces of a settlement from the Late Bronze Age, dating to approximately 1200–1000 BC, were found in Ghiroda. The history of the locality is therefore connected both with a specific 20th-century place of remembrance and with archaeological traces from the Bronze Age.

The old Orthodox church of Ghiroda dates from 1802. The new Orthodox church in Ghiroda was built in 1935. On 10 September, the patronal feast is celebrated at the “Naşterea Sfintei Fecioare Maria” church in Ghiroda. The “Naşterea Sfintei Fecioare Maria” church in Ghiroda is a filial church of the Roman Catholic parish of Timișoara. The Ruga de la Ghiroda also includes a religious service in Ghiroda’s Orthodox church. The Ruga de la Ghiroda is a local festival that brings together tradition, community and good cheer. The Festival – Concurs „Lada cu Zestre” includes an area for exhibitions and collections as well as a gastronomy area. Ziua Universală a Iei Românești includes children’s workshops on traditional crafts, where the children learn, among other things, to weave Sânziene wreaths. The national competition festival “Din Comoara Satului” is dedicated to authentic folklore and young talents from all over Romania. The “Din Comoara Satului” festival takes place at Casa de Cultură Ghiroda – Scena de Vară. These events focus on different aspects: local festival traditions, exhibitions, gastronomy, crafts and folklore.

The Târgul Apicol Ghiroda has a fifteen-year tradition in the local community. The Târgul Apicol Ghiroda presents beekeeping products and was the fifteenth edition of the international beekeeping market. There are other fixed occasions for orientation in time: Zilele Comunei Ghiroda is an annual event held in September and October. The Târgul de Crăciun Ghiroda takes place at the beginning of December and is listed as a recurring event. In this way, Ghiroda’s natural attractions, historical sites and events with different seasonal themes complement one another.
