Săcălaz – History, Churches and Cycling

Săcălaz is documented in a charter dated 29 December 1392. The Săcălaz – Obiectiv 8 archaeological area comprises settlement remains of the Eneolithic Tiszapolgar culture as well as from the post-Roman period. Thus, a written record and archaeological finds from different eras exist side by side.

History and townscape

A colonization decree of 1765 ordered the relocation of the Romanian population from Săcălaz to the southern part of Torontal in order to make room for Swabian settlers. During this period, Săcălaz was redesigned according to a typical Austrian plan; the Catholic church was located in the center. Săcălaz is home to the Catholic church from 1772. On 7 April 2026, the Orthodox community’s wooden church in Săcălaz burned down.

The townscape therefore encompasses both the planned redesign from the period of colonization and the two distinct ecclesiastical building and community traditions. The Catholic church from 1772 is part of the architectural history of the redesigned town, while the Orthodox wooden church is defined by the event of 7 April 2026.

Agriculture and the Bega

Historically, grain cultivation in Săcălaz, particularly wheat and corn, was the inhabitants’ most important occupation. The first grain mill in Săcălaz was built in 1725. Later, the settlement was relocated to the banks of the Bega, onto marshy terrain surrounded by willows and tall reeds.

Wheat and corn thus represent the agricultural focus, while the 1725 grain mill constitutes a separate architectural testimony to this activity. The later relocation to the Bega adds to this historical context the description of the marshy terrain with willows and tall reeds.

Cycling and routes

On 1 July 2026, the Săcălaz municipality completed the project “Development of environmentally friendly transport infrastructure – cycle paths in the municipality of Săcălaz, Timiș County.” The project comprises infrastructure for bicycles and non-motorized means of transport. An almost 30-kilometer-long cycling route leads from Timișoara via Sânmihaiu Român and Săcălaz back to Timișoara.

For cycling, this documents both a completed infrastructure project within the municipality and a specific connection across several places. The route connects Timișoara, Sânmihaiu Român and Săcălaz in a course that returns to Timișoara.

Events

The local event “Zilele Săcălazului” is scheduled for the first Sunday in October. The Wine and Pie Festival is scheduled for the last Saturday before the beginning of the Easter fasting period. The two dates therefore follow different temporal reference points: one is tied to a Sunday in October, while the other is linked to the beginning of the Easter fasting period.

The events calendar therefore includes both an annually scheduled Sunday in October and a date around the Easter fasting period. Both occasions connect Săcălaz with different seasonal and culinary associations.
