Luncanii de Jos: Bega Valley, History and Transluncani

Landscape

The Valea Topla Valley flows into the Valea Mare Valley in the center of Luncanii de Jos. A warm-water spring is located at the source of the Topla stream in Luncani. History and Culture

The settlement of the Bega Valley and the emergence of Luncanii de Jos began in 1734 with the construction of a smelting furnace for metalworking and the extraction of iron ore. Around 1734, hydrotherapeutic facilities existed in Luncai, probably using the warm water of the Topla stream; they were later abandoned for unknown reasons. In 1778, there was a mining office and the Austrian administration of Luncani District. Around 1840, an ironworks was located near the confluence of the Topla stream and the Bega.

A wooden church in Luncani is documented for the year 1794. In Luncanii de Jos, a new wooden church was built in 1872 with the support of Ioan Dumitrescu and the faithful. Between 1974 and 1975, a new church made of stone and bricks was built there; its patronal feast is the Assumption of Mary. Stone houses have also been preserved in Luncanii de Jos. A mural on a retaining wall along the Transluncani road depicts elements of local traditions.

Getting There

The Transluncani road begins in Luncanii de Jos; it is more than five kilometers long and reaches an elevation of 700 meters at its highest point. The Margina motorway exit on the A1 is considered the easiest access route to Luncanii de Jos.
