Harmanec between paper history and mountain trails

Harmanec lies at the meeting point of the Veľká Fatra and Kremnica Mountains. The town combines a distinctive industrial history with traditional customs, protected natural areas and several trails through the surrounding valleys and mountains.

History and customs

The settlement of Harmanec developed around a paper mill built in 1829. In the second half of the 19th century, this paper mill was the largest machine-paper mill in Hungary. The industrial past is therefore one of the defining historical references of the town.

At the same time, Harmanec has preserved the lively Krnačka carnival tradition. Krnačky are larger sledges that were originally used to transport hay and wood. The custom thus also preserves the memory of an earlier use of these sledges.

Nature

The Harmanecká tisina nature reserve has been protected in Harmanec since 1949 and covers 20.05 hectares. Harmanecká tisina is known for its extensive occurrence of yew in the limestone area of the Veľká Fatra. In the wider regional surroundings of Harmanec, Harmanecká tisina is the oldest national nature reserve in Veľká Fatra National Park and protects one of the largest yew populations in Central Europe.

Two different scales therefore coexist in Harmanec: the area within the town that has been protected for decades and its significance in the wider regional surroundings of the national park. The yew and the limestone area form the natural focus of Harmanecká tisina.

Trails in the mountains

The marked hiking trail 8439/a leads from Harmanec through the Cenovo Valley to Kordíky and onward to Kordícke sedlo; the route takes about three hours. Another connection is the blue-marked hiking trail 2617: it leads from Harmanec railway station via Harmanecká jaskyňa to Kordíky and takes about three and a half hours.

A mountain road runs through the Veľké Cenovo Valley, connecting Harmanec with Kordíky. The long-distance Barborská cesta trail also passes through Harmanec. Mountain trails lead from a meadow near Harmanec to the Križná mountain massif and into the Lelekovo Valley in the Staré Hory Mountains. The trails mentioned therefore differ in route, starting point and duration, but each remains closely connected with the mountain landscape around Harmanec.

Other places

In the surroundings of Harmanec, access to Harmanecká jaskyňa leads along a 1,420-metre-long serpentine path with an elevation gain of 260 metres; signs for an educational trail stand along the ascent route. In the surroundings of Harmanec, Harmanecká jaskyňa has a 1,020-metre-long sightseeing circuit. Also in the surroundings of Harmanec, the educational trail to Harmanecká jaskyňa is 1.3 kilometres long and has nine information boards.

The Cenovo small hydropower plant is located in the Harmanecká Valley. It preserves a piece of technological history in the Harmanecká Valley. A water wheel at the Cenovo small hydropower plant generates electricity to illuminate the accessible area and the terrace. The Cenovo small hydropower plant also has a terrace with seating in a planted setting.
