Horná Mičiná lies in the valley of the Mičinský Stream in the Bystrická vrchovina uplands. The surrounding area has a hilly to mountainous character. The landscape and local history are reflected here in various clearly identifiable forms, from protected natural sites and marked trails to churches and regional cultural traditions.

Churches and Local History

The Evangelical church in Horná Mičiná was built in 1784–1785 as a Neoclassical toleration church and remodelled in 1905. It is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Its furnishings include a Rococo altar with a pulpit, a Louise beziehungsweise Louis-seize baptismal font from the end of the 18th century, and an organ in a wooden gallery.

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Horná Mičiná is an Early Gothic single-nave church from the second half of the 13th century, later remodelled in the Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its altar was created in 1700 by an unknown sculpting and carving workshop from the central Slovak region and by an unknown painter who probably also came from this area.

The memory of Ján Chalupka is also part of the local history. Horná Mičiná is the birthplace of the dramatist and writer who wrote Kocúrkovo. A memorial plaque to Ján Chalupka is located on the local Evangelical parish house.

Crafts and Events

Horná Mičiná had a rich tradition of weaving and embroidery with a crooked needle. A Detva-type folk costume is also part of the cultural heritage. Today, this costume is used only rarely; weaving and embroidery belong to the past.

The family-friendly theatre and music festival Mičinský pitvor was held for the ninth time in 2024. The weekend programme on 22 and 23 June took place in Horná Mičiná.

Hiking Trail

The yellow-marked hiking route no. 8453 runs through the landscape. It leads from Vlkanová via Mičinské lúky to Horná Mičiná.
