Motyčky: Find a hotel – church, reservoir and charcoal-burning tradition

Motyčky combines the history of a former settlement of lumberjacks and charcoal burners with a Baroque church, a waterworks complex and an event centered around charcoal making. The settlement was formerly called Pri Rybníku; it already appears under the current name Motyčky toward the end of the 17th century. Motyčky is also one of the municipalities in the Banská Bystrica Geopark.

Culture

The oldest building in Motyčky is the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Jesuits built it in 1754 together with a small monastery. The church was solemnly consecrated as early as 1755. It was built in the Baroque style and is of significant cultural and historical heritage value. Masses are regularly held in the church.

Water

Motyčky Reservoir is one of the waterworks built on the Starohorský potok between 1923 and 1925. At the same time, it forms part of the cascade of the Motyčky–Dolný Jelenec–Staré Hory hydroelectric facilities. Motyčky Reservoir is not intended for recreational swimming.

Below the church, in the municipality of Motyčky, lies the 2-hectare VN Motyčky fishing grounds, designated as a salmonid water. Fishing in Motyčky Reservoir is possible with the appropriate fishing permit.

Events

Charcoal Burners’ Day will take place in Motyčky on September 5, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event is the culmination of four days of charcoal making supervised by charcoal burners from Hrušov. The program includes the construction of a new charcoal kiln and a historical metal-smelting demonstration. This means that the event focuses both on the traditional craft of charcoal burning and on a historical work process.
