Slovenská Ľupča between Ľupča Castle, Kláštorisko and the Hron

Culture and history

Ľupča Castle has preserved Late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical components. Ľupča Castle stands above the Hron Valley between Banská Bystrica and Brezno. Its preserved elements document the development of castle architecture from the mid-13th century to the present day.

The Kláštorisko monastery complex represents another historical period. Its oldest part, the church, dates from the first half of the 13th century. An evangelical lyceum was housed in the Kláštorisko monastery in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Kláštorisko Archaeological Park is located at the entrance to Slovenská Ľupča on the old road from Banská Bystrica and includes the excavations of a medieval monastery. A medieval cellar can be visited.

Nature and landscape

The Ľupčiansky skalný hríb rises above the left bank of the Ľupčica stream on the Stráň slope. Its shape was formed by the weathering of sedimentary rock under the influence of wind; harder layers of carbonate conglomerate alternate with softer sandstone interlayers. The Ľupčiansky skalný hríb has been legally protected since 1979. From its summit, there is a view of the Hron Valley as well as the ridges of the Low Tatras and the Slovak Ore Mountains.

Driekyňa refers to a 10.6 km-long valley formed by the two branches Mokrá Driekyňa and Suchá Driekyňa. It originates on the northern slopes of the Poľana Massif outside the municipality of Slovenská Ľupča. The left tributary of the same name flows into the Hron.

Routes and activities

Below Ľupča Castle run the long-distance Via Magna route in a north–south direction and a regional road leading from the central Slovak mining towns via Banská Bystrica and Poniky towards Spiš.

The most important cycling route in the Hron region connects Banská Bystrica with Slovenská Ľupča and runs mostly in the shade of forests. A green cycle path in the mountain area is signposted as an easy circular route, has an elevation gain of 230 metres, runs on asphalt for about one third of its length and otherwise on compacted gravel, and can be completed in about 90 minutes at a moderate recreational pace.

The two cycling options can be compared by connection or circular route, surface and approximate time frame. In the surrounding area, an agency organises rafting trips on the Hron River from May to September and provides the technical equipment, boat rental and the services of a watersports instructor.
