Medzibrod: Nature, Culture and Hotels
Medzibrod combines nature, waterways, a cycling route and culture at specific, named locations. The landscape and local history stand side by side on an equal footing, creating a diverse picture of this Slovak locality.
Nature and Waterways
The part of Medzibrod’s cadastral area located north of the Hron belongs to the NAPANT protected area. North of Medzibrod there is also the 42.23-hectare Máčková Nature Reserve, home to numerous pasque flowers. Forest-steppe communities and near-natural beech forest communities have been preserved there. Forests cover almost 60 percent of Medzibrod’s cadastral area. The lady’s slipper orchid is considered a characteristic plant of Medzibrod’s flora and blooms in natural beech forests on calcareous soil.
Water also shapes the geographical location of the locality: the Hron flows along the eastern-southern side of Medzibrod, and the Vyvieranica and Močiar streams flow into it.
Cycling Route
A cycling route runs through Medzibrod and connects the locality with Hiadeľ, Brusno and Pohronský Bukovec. In addition to Medzibrod, three other named localities are therefore included along the route.
Culture and Local History
The parish church in Medzibrod was built of stone in 1790, consecrated on 16 May 1791 and constructed in the Rococo style. The church contains an organ loft, a mechanical tower clock and three bells. The organ was extensively restored in 2008. The church also has eight stained-glass windows, which the artist Ladislav Cserba created for it in 2008 and 2009.
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk is also part of the locality’s history. It was built in 1808 as a votive chapel commemorating the rescue of the inhabitants living along the Hron from ice dammed up in the river. The name Medzibrod is associated with the historical location between fords. Medzibrod is also home to a water tower used to fill steam locomotives.
A distinct cultural facet is represented by the Medzibrodské kočovné divadlo. It focuses primarily on Slovak and foreign classical plays with a comic character.
Local Life and Events
The Haruľová šou, held annually in September, is a competition in which teams compete for the Haruľa of the Year. It also includes a competition for the longest potato peel. The event is accompanied by an extensive cultural programme and other supporting events.
