Žarnovica: Church, Revište Castle and Speedway – Find Hotels

In Žarnovica, the cultural and historical trail begins at the originally Gothic Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul, built around 1400. Its tower has a Gothic core, a Renaissance upper section and paired sound openings in the style of a campanile. A portal from the ruins of the Revište castle chapel has been incorporated into the church building; it is decorated with intersecting rods, diamond-shaped bases and two mascarons. Žarnovica is also home to the Neo-Gothic Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built in 1894. A Stations of the Cross with 14 stations was created at this chapel at the beginning of the 21st century.

History

The Žarnovický kaštieľ is a building dating from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. According to historical sources, it was built in 1490 by Filip Dóczy, presumably on the older foundations of a fortified castle. A presumably originally medieval Gothic castle at the Žarnovický kaštieľ served as an advanced fortification of Revište Castle. In 1575, a meeting of seven mining towns took place at the Žarnovický kaštieľ. At the meeting, it was agreed to send a delegation to Vienna to ask the emperor for help against the Turks.

Culture and Castle Landscape

The ruins of Revište Castle are located in Revištské Podzámčie, a district of Žarnovica. The oldest written mention of the castle dates from 1331. The castle stands on a rocky andesite promontory on the right bank of the Hron. The “Majitelia hradu Revište” educational trail was created in August 2012 and consists of eight panels with depictions of the castle owners and a brief history of the castle.

In Revištské Podzámčie, Zveropark offers the opportunity to observe interesting animals. The municipal sports complex is home to the Žarnovický plochodrážny štadión, with a 400-metre speedway track surfaced with dolomite. Speedway Academy offers motorcycles, spare parts and riding gear free of charge to anyone interested. The Speedway Club Žarnovica has organised the “Plochá dráha detí” event practically since the club’s beginnings. In addition, the 62nd edition of the “Zlatá prilba SNP” event was upcoming.
