Dievčia skala lies above the main road towards Nová Baňa, less than two kilometres from Orovnica, and offers beautiful views of the Hron Valley. A small chapel was carved into the rock below its summit in the second half of the 19th century. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands behind a metal grille inside. Dievčia skala was a pilgrimage site: in the summers of the 1950s and 1960s, residents of Orovnica held Marian devotions there almost every Sunday. The rock is associated with a legend known throughout the wider area. One version tells of a girl who saved her brother from forced conscription by jumping from the rock; a second says that she freed her beloved in this way.
Landscape and Trails
The municipal area of Orovnica lies mostly on the southeastern slopes of the Pohronský Inovec; only a small part is located in the Hron Valley. The Hron flows through the municipal area. It forms the geographical axis of the region and a deep, pronounced valley. This valley is bordered by the Štiavnické vrchy, Pohronský Inovec, Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges, as well as the Žiarska kotlina basin.
A more demanding hike leads through the Orovnický potok valley to the summit of Veľký Inovec at an altitude of 901 m.
Culture and History
The Zemné valy begin at elevation point 378 m on the western slope above the bank of the Hron, south of the Orovnica cemetery at Úkolné. The fortification is 1,200 metres long in total. The named Zemné valy comprise parallel ramparts and ditches extending towards Červený kameň as far as Hradiský potok, also called Orovnický potok.
The Roman Catholic Church of Kostol sv. Jána Boscu was built in 1935 on the site of an older wooden bell tower. This older bell tower is decorated with ornamental paintings, biblical scenes and medallions featuring portraits of saints. The monument to the fallen partisans, “Pomník padlých partizánov”, in Orovnica is listed as a national cultural monument and memorial site. The “Pamätné miesto SNP s pomníkom” in Orovnica was designated a national cultural monument in 1963.
