Hiking trails to the summit of Vtáčnik often begin in Ostrý Grúň. One of these routes is a yellow-marked hiking trail from Ostrý Grúň. The network of trails is complemented by cycling routes and the Kľakovskou dolinou educational trail, allowing various landscape and cultural connections to come together in this locality within a compact thematic area.

Trails, Cycling Routes and Nature

The Kľakovskou dolinou educational trail is 32 kilometers long and passes through Ostrý Grúň. It was established by the municipalities of Kľak, Ostrý Grúň and Hrabičov along the route of a disused forest railway. In winter, the educational trail also serves as a cross-country ski track. The Pokuty earth bridge provides another point of reference for the trail; it is considered the best-preserved structure on the “Po stopách lesnej železnice Kľakovskou dolinou” educational trail.

For bicycles, the national cycling-route register lists route 2596 Hrad Revište–Ostrý Grúň–Píla, with a length of 31.7 kilometers. The blue-marked Ostrý Grúň–Píla cycling route is 19 kilometers long and has an elevation gain of 880 meters; it is intended for experienced mountain-bike or e-bike riders. This route begins at the Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Ostrý Grúň. The cycling route to Revište Castle leads from the center of Ostrý Grúň toward Hrabičov and then turns into the Pokutská Valley.

The Pokutský Waterfall lies in the vicinity of Ostrý Grúň. It is a protected natural monument in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. Near Ostrý Grúň, the waterfall can be reached via a mostly asphalt road along the Pokutský Stream from the southern edge of the village.

Culture and Remembrance

A round of Ostrogrúnska ostrá kosa is regularly held in the meadows above Ostrý Grúň as part of the Slovak hand-mowing league. The hand-mowing and cultural event was first held on June 10, 2006; the event also includes a short mowing course.

The Vtáčnik vocal ensemble was founded in Ostrý Grúň on May 5, 2008. It strives to remain actively engaged so that the customs of its ancestors remain alive, and it plans to develop a folkloric focus.

In the lower part of Ostrý Grúň stands the Pomník umučených občanov memorial at the place where residents were murdered on January 21, 1945. The memorial is a national cultural monument. The Ostrý Grúň Memorial Room was reopened in 2005 in cooperation with the SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica and is located next to the municipal office. A sculpture of a mother with a child dating from 1954 also stands in front of the municipal office.

Historical buildings include the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a vernacular Classicist structure from the late 18th century. On the Pokuty earth bridge, a gable plaque bears the inscription “STAVĚNO 1926,” indicating that it was built in 1926.
