History

The historic population of Horné Hámre initially consisted of lumberjacks and charcoal burners, and later of miners and people who processed ores from local and other mines. This sequence describes a change in the local working environment: the use of the forest was followed by closer ties to mining and the processing of ores from various sources.

Trails

The municipality of Horné Hámre invites visitors to explore the educational hiking trail in the surroundings of the municipality. The “In the Footsteps of the Forest Railway through the Kľak Valley” educational trail also passes through Horné Hámre. Another educational trail is called “Get to Know the Forest with Hámroš” and begins at the Pekný les cycling rest area near the Horné Hámre Calvary. The trail is 350 metres long, runs in one direction and has an elevation gain of 65 metres. There are seven educational stations with QR codes along the route.

Cycling

An easy cycling route leads from Žarnovica through Žarnovická Huta to Pekný les and follows the route of the former forest railway. Horseback riding is also available in the Pekný les area.

Culture

The Horné Hámre Calvary comprises 14 stations. Another memorial site is the SNP Monument at Brode. It commemorates the fighting that took place in the surroundings of Horné Hámre on 26 and 27 September 1944, as well as the fallen soldiers of the Trnava garrison during the liberation of Horné Hámre and the surrounding area.

The monument is located at the end of Horné Hámre, above the built-up area, on the road towards Veľké Pole. It is freely accessible at the turn-off towards Ostrý Grúň. Thus, both the historical events and its precise location within the municipal area are central to this site.
