Discover Dettwa: Folk Culture, Museum and Nature

Dettwa can be explored in a particularly tangible way through the traditional folk culture of Detva. The Fujara is closely associated with this folk culture and was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2005.

Culture

Detva has hosted the Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou since 1966. The event is based on traditional folk culture and takes place annually on the second weekend of July.

The historic Vagač House in Detva is where Slovakia’s first bryndza cheese dairy was founded in the 19th century. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Francis of Assisi was built between 1803 and 1805 and is a protected cultural monument.

Museum

The “Instrumentum Excellens FSP Detva” exhibition of folk musical instruments at the Podpolianske Museum displays 118 instruments by 47 makers from Slovakia. The permanent exhibition on Slovak folk musical instruments uses educational and interactive elements.

The permanent exhibition “Ovce moje, ovce...” at the Podpolianske Museum presents the Vlach culture of the Podpoľanie region. The Podpolianske Museum in Detva offers year-round cultural and educational activities for visitors of all ages, as well as creative art workshops with a regional character.

The Podpolianske Museum is located in the historic part of Detva, in a former municipal office building.

Nature

In the immediate vicinity of Detva, the Melichova skala natural monument is a column-shaped rock above the settlement of Skliarovo. It is the preserved remnant of the front of a lava flow, featuring forms created by flowing lava; a blue-marked hiking trail leads around the rock.

Near Detva lies the Kalamárka natural monument, visited by tourists north of the town and serving as an educational object for specialist instruction. The red-marked Rudná magistrála hiking trail and the Kalamárka educational trail lead from Detva to the Kalamárka natural monument.

Town and Trails

The Detva Tourist Information Centre offers the interactive game “Magická cesta ku klenotom Detvy”. As part of the game, visitors explore the town through interactive tasks, puzzles and entertaining stations.
