Podkriváň: Hotels, Nature and Culture in the Zvolen Basin
Podkriváň is located in Pohroní Poľany in the Zvolen Basin, on the connection between Lučenec and Zvolen and on the boundary between the Slovak Ore Mountains and Javorie. Several geographical references therefore meet here, clearly positioning the village within the Slovak landscape.
The Krivánsky potok Natural Monument includes the upper course of the Krivánsky potok. This section and its riparian vegetation are protected along a length of approximately 2.65 kilometres. The protected and endangered ostrich fern (Perovník Pštrosí), water forget-me-not and glandular toothwort grow in the natural monument. The name of the protected area refers to the Krivánsky potok and remains closely connected with this protected stream.
Cycling
The 117-kilometre-long Novohradská cyklomagistrála, Route 013, passes through Podkriváň. Its route leads through Detva, Podkriváň, Divín and Lučenec. The route thus connects several specifically named places and provides a clear reference for anyone who wants to plan their journey around a longer cycling route.
Two events are also associated with Podkriváň. The “Podkriváňska šesťdesiatka” event reached its 45th edition. The “Tradičná chuť Podpoľania” event was also scheduled to take place in Podkriváň on 22 June 2024. Both details refer to specific dates or event characteristics and are clearly distinguishable in time.
Culture
Podkriváň is home to the Roman Catholic Classicist Church of Saint Martin, Bishop and Confessor. It was built in Podkriváň in 1803. Another sacred building is the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua in Podkriváň, dating from 1856. Horná Bzová is also home to a filial chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help dating from 1910.
The local heritage includes the grave of Anton Emanuel Timko, with a grave monument located in Podkriváň. The former craft and technical uses are also documented with specific details: a new glassworks was built in Podkriváň in 1849–1850, producing greenish hollow and flat glass. The municipality of Podkriváň also contains the remains of a water mill that belonged to Štefan Francisci in 1930 and was powered by an overshot water wheel.
Another architectural feature can be found in the Laz settlements: there are several log houses. Together with the churches, chapels, grave monument, glassworks and water-mill remains mentioned above, they represent different forms of local architectural and commemorative heritage, each with its own location or date.
When considering a hotel in Podkriváň or comparing several hotel offers, check the exact location, accommodation type and occupancy before booking. The included services, individual price components and applicable booking and cancellation conditions are equally important. The booking view brings these points together for each offer and enables an objective comparison. This keeps the decision focused on the conditions actually stated; facilities, what is included in the price and rules may vary from one offer to another. Check these fields again immediately before completing your booking.
