Píla lies in the eastern part of the Javorie in a narrow valley at the foot of Javor, on a right-hand tributary of the Kriváň stream. The cadastral area includes granite rocks of the Veporské Crystalline Complex and volcanic tuffs; Javor reaches an elevation of 821 metres.

Nature

The Píľanský potok, also locally known as “Pilňanka”, flows through Píla. It flows into the Kriváňsky potok and rises in the cadastral area of Píla. The Mýtna Reservoir is also located nearby and is an attractive fishing area stocked with carp, zander and pike.

The natural area includes the PP Krivánsky potok Nature Monument. It protects approximately 2.65 kilometres of the upper course of the Krivánsky potok, part of its tributary Bzovský potok and the riparian vegetation. The nature monument covers areas near Podkriváň, Píla near Mýtna and Mýtna and has an area of 10.23 hectares. The protected and endangered ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris L., Tod.) grows there.

Hiking

A marked hiking route leads from Divín to Píla railway station; a blue-marked variant leads to Javor. The Javor hike begins in Píla, initially follows a yellow-marked route through the village and then continues along a blue-marked route to the summit of Javor.

Culture and History

The Píliansky Tunnel is a notable testament to railway history. It was built in 1871 as part of the Šalgotarján–Lučenec–Zvolen railway line and is 121 metres long. The tunnel is a popular attraction for photographers and railway enthusiasts and can be easily reached from Píla railway station via the former railway track. A railway station was established in Píla in 1942.

The built heritage also includes the brick bell tower of Píla. It was built after 1750 and contains a bell cast in 1811. A local tradition is also regularly maintained: every year, Píla holds the Maypole tradition known as “stavanie a váľanie mája”.
