Radzovce: Monosa, Archaeology and Manor Houses

In Radzovce, an archaeological site includes a cremation cemetery with 1,334 graves. The village lies in the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, on the floodplain and terrace of the Belina stream.

Nature

The area around Radzovce consists of Upper Tertiary sediments as well as volcanic tuffites and basalts. The Monická-Lesostep is a protected area in Radzovce. A distinctive landscape feature is Monosa, a 584-metre-high volcanic cinder cone visible from the surrounding area. A four-kilometre-long lava flow extends northwest from Monosa. Weathered rocks on the western edge of the Monosa lava flow offer views of the Monosa Valley and the settlement of Obručná.

Culture and History

The archaeological site in Radzovce contains traces of a Bronze Age settlement associated with the Piliny and Kyjatice cultures. A temporary exhibition on the archaeological site of Radzovce can be seen at the cultural and historical museum in Radzovce. In Monosa, a large cremation cemetery from the Middle to Late Bronze Age provides evidence of Celtic activity associated with the La Tène period.

The historic buildings in Radzovce include the preserved Secessionist manor house, a single-storey rectangular building with an octagonal corner tower. It was remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century and has essentially retained its Secessionist form to this day. A second manor house in Radzovce was built by Ferenc Vecsey in 1894. The Roman Catholic school building dates from 1760, while the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates from 1913.

Views and Activities

At the western edge of the Monosa lava flow, weathered rocks open up views of the Monosa Valley and Obručná. The settlement was founded in 1914 by Slovak woodcutters. A monument in Obručná commemorates the people who were killed there during a partisan battle in 1944.

Above Obručná, a leisure centre offers opportunities for active recreation and sports. The Obručná leisure centre has a swimming pool and provides the opportunity to hike to Pohanský vrch. A nearby lookout tower offers panoramic views of Mount Karanč and the municipalities of Čakanovce and Radzovce.
