Holiša – Ipeľ, Nature and Culture

Holiša is located in the southeastern part of the Lučenec Basin on a terrace of the Ipeľ at the mouth of the Suchá stream.

Nature and Landscape

Holiša is home to biotopes consisting of fields, meadows, pastures and bodies of water; alongside insects, birds are the most species-rich faunal group. In the Poiplie Special Protection Area, there is a body of water near Holiša created by surface gravel extraction. Between 2010 and 2012, a total of 18 breeding territories were recorded in the Poiplie Special Protection Area; territories were also located in or near Holiša.

The Rybník Holiša pond lies at an elevation of 180 m above sea level, is fed by water from the Ipeľ and is located in a meadow biotope; its catchment area covers 2.5 ha. Fruit growing has a long tradition in Holiša. When planning a day, the different biotope types can be considered as separate nature themes alongside one another.

The 13.3 km Južný cyklookruh mesta Lučenec cycling route runs near Holiša. Holiša is located near the Novohrad–Nógrád Geopark, which has been included in the UNESCO Global and European Geoparks networks.

The Splav Ipľa canoe route from Holiša to Kalonda is 10 km long. The Splav Ipľa canoe trip begins in Holiša in a protected bird area. Culture and History

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Holiša is a Baroque church built in 1768 on older foundations. It has three bells: the oldest dates from 1612, while the others date from 1847 and 1930.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Holiša is listed under number 11224/0 in the Central Register of the Monument Fund of the Slovak Republic (ÚZPF SR). The first documented evidence of a water mill in Holiša comes from a register dating from 1549.

The historic water mill of Holiša was probably located on the southern edge of the village beside a mill race that formed the northern branch of the Ipeľ River. The Roman Catholic reading circle and choir in Holiša were founded in 1895. By 1934 at the latest, Holiša had a tradition of amateur theatre; that year, the play Vörös haju was rehearsed.
