Makov: Hotels, Nature, Trails and Winter

Makov features a hilly to mountainous landscape. At 1,070 m, Veľký Javorník is the highest point. The natural and landscape features range from preserved natural forest stands to prominent high-altitude areas.

Nature

Because of its preserved natural forest stands and its landscape and aesthetic values, Makov is part of the CHKO Kysuce Protected Landscape Area. The cadastral area of Makov also contains the Veľký Javorník National Nature Reserve in the Javorníky Mountains at an elevation of 1,071 m. The highest point in the municipality, Veľký Javorník, is therefore at 1,070 m; the nature reserve is located at an elevation of 1,071 m.

Makov is also home to the U Papaji elm. It is considered the oldest and most powerful field elm in Central Europe and is almost 500 years old.

Trails and Winter

The Makov Centrum–Bumbálka route is designated for MTB bicycles. It is a 9 km green route with an elevation gain of 450 m. The educational trail “Ku prameňu Kysuce” offers a different type of route: in Makov, it leads to a restored source of the Kysuca River, a rest area and four information boards. As a hike, the educational trail is easy, although it includes a steeper ascent; it is 3 km long, with a total elevation gain of 194 m.

The source of the Kysuca River itself is not accessible to visitors. The educational trail and this inaccessible source are therefore separate local points of reference.

In winter sports, Ski Makov offers ski and snowboard rental, ski servicing, and a ski school and ski kindergarten for beginners. Ski Makov has five easy to intermediate downhill runs at elevations of 660 to 948 m, with a total length of 6,000 m. In addition, the “Beskydsko-javornícka magistrála” runs through the Javorníky Mountains as a 12 km-long ridge route along the border.

Melocík can be reached by bus from Makov–Ústredie or from the Bytča bus station.

Culture

The “PORAZISKO” information board in Makov covers the local history in connection with the largest anti-Habsburg uprising in the former Kingdom of Hungary and the burial of fallen Kuruc soldiers at this site. The historical reference thus remains connected to local history and the fallen buried there.

The historic building stock includes the Classicist church “Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla” in Makov, built in 1803.
