Svrčinovec combines religious sites, a living cultural heritage and traces of history with paths through wooded landscapes. The focal point is the Stations of the Cross (Krížová cesta): they connect Stará dedina–Závršie, where the settlement of Svrčinovec began, with present-day Svrčinovec. Symbolically, the Stations of the Cross end in front of the entrance to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows on Závršie. Every year on the feast day of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, a pilgrimage and a solemn Mass traditionally take place at this chapel.

Culture

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Svrčinovec dates from 1937. The Roman Catholic church was solemnly consecrated on 5 July 1945. Inside, there is a depiction of Our Lady of Lourdes as well as paintings of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was converted from a former community school in Za vrchami. Svrčinovec therefore brings together different forms of sacred history: a church with a documented construction year and consecration date, and a chapel whose origins lie in a former school building.

The U Katraka natural amphitheatre is also one of the cultural sites mentioned. It was built for various cultural and social activities and to promote Goral culture. In Svrčinovec, Goralské ostatky is regarded as a tradition that remains alive to this day. It brings the community together and preserves the cultural heritage of the Gorals and the partner municipality. Together with children from the folk ensemble, FSk Svrčinka carried out Morena on the fifth Sunday of Lent and symbolically said farewell to winter.

Landscape

The Stations of the Cross pass through the wooded landscape of Svrčinovec. In places, they offer views of the town centre and lead as far as the state border with the Czech Republic. Another historic connection lies in the Čerňanka valley: historically, it provided a safe passage through the Svrčinovec area to the Jablunkov Pass and the Czech lands.

History

Old Schantze (Staré Šance) is a historic site on the 634-metre-high summit of a rise in Svrčinovec. Together with Jablunkovské šance, Malé šance in Čierne, Valmi, the Šance in Koniaków and the fortification on Bukovec, Staré Šance formed a joint defensive system for protecting the Jablunkov Pass. The individual historic site is therefore connected with several fortifications on both sides of the pass area.

Routes

A cross-country skiing route leads from the church in Svrčinovec along the ridge to the Studeničné chalet. The green-marked hiking trail from Svrčinovec runs northwest to the state border near the settlement of Dejovka and then continues into Moravia to Mosty u Jablunkova. The terrain around Staré Šance is suitable for cycling tourism. Thus, the village and its historic landmarks feature both a winter ridge route and marked cross-border trails, as well as cycling opportunities around Staré Šance.
