Nová Bystrica is home to a permanent open-air exhibition at the Múzeum Kysuckej dediny in Nová Bystrica–Vychylovka, documenting and presenting the former life and culture of the Kysuce population. Other specific local attractions include a narrow-gauge forest railway, the church of Riečnica, the path along the dam of the Vodná nádrž Nová Bystrica – Vychylovka reservoir and a circular trail along the Kysucká magistrála.
Culture
The open-air museum contains residential and agricultural buildings, as well as technical and religious structures that were relocated from several villages in Kysuce. A special role is played by the narrow-gauge reversing-loop forest railway of the Múzeum Kysuckej dediny. It carries visitors along a 3.6 km route through the museum grounds. The reversing-loop forest railway is also a national cultural monument.
Between the open-air museum station and Beskid Saddle, visitors can travel by historic train or handcar. The railway is therefore not only part of the exhibition, but is also connected with a specific route within this area.
History
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the former municipality of Riečnica is a single-nave Neo-Romanesque church built in 1905. Following the relocation of Riečnica, it is the only material evidence of the existence of the former village. In 1996, the church was declared a cultural monument.
The church is located in the area of the Nová Bystrica reservoir. Group visits can be organised there only exceptionally and by prior arrangement.
Nature
Along the school educational trail Školský náučný chodník Prírodné spoločenstvá doliny Chmúra, information boards describe the typical ecosystems of water, soil, meadow and coniferous forest. The individual habitats are referred to by their designations as water, soil, meadow and coniferous forest ecosystems.
At the dam of the Vodná nádrž Nová Bystrica – Vychylovka reservoir, there is a path offering views of part of the reservoir. Another natural formation is Vychylovské prahy on the Vychylovka stream in Nová Bystrica. It shows the typical stepped course of a mountain stream through layers of claystone and sandstone. The rocky section extends for approximately 150 m, is visible from the road and is suitable as a stop on the way to the Múzeum Kysuckej dediny Vychylovka.
Trails and Cuisine
The Okruh Hrebeňom Kysúc circular trail begins at a car park in Nová Bystrica and leads towards Stará Bystrica via the Kysucká magistrála. A traditional inn along the circular trail serves traditional dishes, and the staff wear Kysuce folk costumes.
