Párnica between the Orava Highlands and the Lesser Fatra

Párnica lies on the southwestern edge of the Orava Highlands and at the northeastern foothills of the Lesser Fatra. The village stretches along the Orava River on both banks of the Zázrivka stream. The landscape includes the Párnické Lakes, with 21 lakes of varying sizes. They formed in the Orava floodplain as a result of gravel extraction between 1957 and 1997. Párnica is also home to a thermal mineral spring.

Nature

The Párnické Lakes form their own ecosystem, inhabited by beavers. A 1.5-kilometre educational trail leads through this landscape and takes about 30 minutes at a brisk pace. The trail starts at the bus stop in Párnica, where there is an information board and signposts. The educational trail is also suitable for cyclists.

The EKOcentrum Pod Širákom is located at the Párnické Lakes. It is designed as an outdoor classroom and features an interactive table about local wildlife. Signposts at the EKOcentrum lead to a fox educational trail and to a beaver bay.

Activities

Párnica is home to the Šport centrum Lučivná SKI. Its ski runs are located in the Lesser Fatra National Park, in the valley of the Zázrivka River. The centre offers a ski school as well as ski and snowboard rentals.

The black Čierna run is 1,400 metres long, has an elevation difference of 504 metres, and an average gradient of 36 percent.

Another event on the local calendar is the traditional Párnickô švábkobraňá festival. It takes place on 22 and 23 August 2026 in Párnica’s sports complex. The festival features folklore, music, crafts, traditional food, and entertainment for the whole family.

Culture and history

Izba starých materí is the first municipal museum in Párnica. The museum includes a rural living room, a barn, and a room with historical documents, including photographs. A total of 230 exhibits are on display, loaned or donated by residents and by people originating from Párnica.

The first known written mention of Párnica dates back to 1420. At that time, the village was referred to as “Villa Parnice” and as a subject village of Orava Castle. Traditional local crafts included wagon-making, carpentry, and woodcarving.

The Evangelical church in Párnica is a monumental church building. It was built in 1926–1927 to a design by the architect J. Burjan and features echoes of Cubist decorative elements. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The altarpiece was painted by M. Mitrovský and is dated 1928.

At Ateliér Rabada in Párnica, visitors can take part in workshops where they design and create their own original Modrotlač pattern. A guided tour of the studio also offers an opportunity to learn about the Modrotlač production process.
