Zázrivá: Nature, Educational Trail and Hotels

A 2 km-long educational trail begins at the entrance to the rescue station in Zázrivá-Dolina. The circular route leads back to the rescue station and includes a shelter and benches; it can be completed in about one hour at a moderate pace. Eight information panels provide information about the activities of the rescue station and the eco-centre, the region’s animals and plants, birds of prey, Zázrivá, Malá Fatra National Park, the trees in the surrounding area, as well as nature conservation and tourism.

Trails

The municipality of Zázrivá extends into several mountain ranges of the Fatra-Tatra region and the Central Beskids. These include Malá Fatra, Kysucká vrchovina and Oravská Magura. A hiking route from Zázrivá via Medzirozsutce to Veľký Rozsutec is listed as taking 3 hours and 20 minutes. The 20 km-long Terchová–Zázrivá–Hoľa cycling route also passes through Zázrivá.

Nature

The landscape around Zázrivá includes numerous meadows, pastures, waterfalls, ponds and streams. These landscape features are predominantly surrounded by spruce and beech forests as well as krummholz. The rescue station in Zázrivá is dedicated to rescuing injured, weakened or otherwise impaired animals, particularly birds, from all over Slovakia.

The eco-garden in Zázrivá features various plant and tree species, a wetland pond, nesting boxes, watering places, and areas for insects and reptiles. The educational trail’s topics and the eco-garden’s facilities therefore cover different aspects of the region’s nature, from plants and trees to animals and their habitats.

Culture

Zázrivá’s sights include wooden houses. The Church of the Virgin Mary in Zázrivá dates from 1928. The Zázrivské dni festival takes place at the end of July. The programme includes cultural events, Korbáčik-making competitions, farms, craftspeople, a fair with people in traditional costumes and a procession.

A special craft tradition is Zázrivský korbáčik. It is traditionally made almost exclusively by hand: curd cheese is steamed in hot water, pulled into strings and then braided into a korbáčik. According to tradition, Zázrivský korbáčik has been made in Zázrivá since the second half of the 19th century. At Salaš Zázrivá, visitors can see a demonstration of the traditional production of fresh and smoked sheep’s cheese. Salaš Syrex can be visited year-round, and visitors can pet the horses there.

Winter

Dolná Plešivá is a ski centre directly in Zázrivá. The Kozinec ski centre in Zázrivá-Havrania has numerous runs that are more suitable for experienced skiers.
