Vyšný Kubín: Hotels and Cultural History

Vyšný Kubín lies on the northwestern slope of the Chočské vrchy mountains. The village brings together sacred architecture, memorial sites dedicated to Slovak writers, archaeological themes and a protected area. As a result, different facets are closely connected thematically: the history of the village ranges from late Gothic foundations and historic manor houses to reconstructed settlement structures and the remains of fortified hillforts.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity is a single-nave sacred building constructed on late Gothic foundations dating from the 15th century. Its main altar features a 15th-century statue of the Most Holy Trinity. Another cultural landmark is Arpádovský Manor House. It houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the village, P. O. Hviezdoslav and other figures associated with Vyšný Kubín.

Several monuments and memorial plaques preserve the village’s connection with literature. The “Priadka” monument is dedicated to the mother of P. Hviezdoslav. In the village centre, a monument marks the site where the poet P. Hviezdoslav’s birthplace once stood. A memorial plaque bearing the inscription “House of Youth of Margita Figuli” marks the house where the writer Margita Figuli spent part of her life.

The Mokrý kút Archaeopark presents reconstructed archaeological architecture and settlement structures. The Archaeopark also displays replicas of archaeological objects from specific periods of the archaeological cultures represented in the region. The Mokrý kút Archaeopark can be visited year-round by prior telephone appointment.

The restored Kaštieľ Kubínyi manor house has been opened to the general public. A guided tour of Kaštieľ Kubínyi covers both the Renaissance and Baroque sections. In suitable weather conditions, the tour also includes a walk through the English park.

Nature

The protected Ostrá skala and Tupá skala locality includes distinctive rock formations and several smaller caves. Ostrá skala and Tupá skala are archaeological sites containing the remains of fortified hillforts. Thus, natural features and historical traces are found directly within the same described area at these rocky sites.

From Tupá skala, there is a view across almost the entire lower Orava region.
