Demänovská Dolina: Caves, Nature and Mountains

Demänovská Dolina combines cave visits with nature trails and the Jasná mountain resort. In the Demänovská jaskyňa slobody, the traditional tour route leads through sections of the cave system that have been open to visitors since 5 May 1933. Finds in the Okno Cave provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in the Demänovská Dolina valley.

Nature

Demänovská dolina is designated as a national nature reserve. Several hiking trails pass through the Demänovská dolina National Nature Reserve. One of the area's distinctive natural features is Vrbické pleso: the lake is a glacial moraine lake and the largest natural lake in the Low Tatras.

Several trails and educational paths focus on different themes. The Príbeh vody educational trail is 4 kilometres long and begins at the entrance to the Demänovská Dolina valley. The Panoramatický chodník Chopok has eight thematic stations covering national park and natural history as well as the Liptov and Horehronie regions. The cable cars at the Jasná mountain resort make it possible to ascend to 2,004 metres above sea level, below Chopok. During the summer season, more than 40 Valaška sheep can be seen at Salaš Priehyba in Jasná.

Things to do

The Symbolický cintorín obetiam Nízkych Tatier commemorates the victims of mountain accidents in the Low Tatras. It can be reached via marked hiking trails from Biela Púť in 1.5 kilometres, from Vrbické pleso in 2 kilometres and from the Demänovská jaskyňa slobody in 1.5 kilometres.

The nearest public transport stop to the Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa is called “Demänovská dolina, Ľadová jaskyňa”.

Culture and history

The history of tourism and the ski resort is the subject of a dedicated educational trail. It runs from Biela Púť to the Björnson Cottage, is 692 metres long and takes about 30 minutes. The Veľká cena Demänovských jaskýň ski races have become a tradition.

Cycling and winter sports

The Jasná Bike Park has two bike trails: Flow trail and Sport trail. The Demänovská Dolina – Jaskyňa Slobody – Jasná – Tri vody cycling route is 12.4 kilometres long. The Jasná mountain resort in Demänovská Dolina offers ski terrain.
