Hybe: Local History and the Sub-Tatra Landscape

In the historic center of the built-up settlement, the Hybe heritage zone protects a concentration of historic values. At the same time, it preserves the historic layout and historic parcel division of the town. This means that attention is directed not only to individual buildings: the spatial arrangement and division of the town are also part of what has been preserved. Several two-room and three-room wooden houses with hearths have been preserved in Hybe. The combination of settlement structure and specific buildings gives the town center several layers, without reducing it to a single monument.

The Protestant church in Hybe was built between 1822 and 1826. The former elementary school building is also part of the historic townscape. It dates from 1909 and was built according to a design by the architect Harminc. The two buildings complement the townscape with clearly dated examples of different building functions.

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints is centrally located on the square in Hybe. It was originally built around 1300 as an early Gothic church. Buried in the crypt beneath Hybe's Church of All Saints is the Renaissance poet of the Kingdom of Hungary, Baron Valentín Balaša (Bálint Balassa), who lived from 1554 to 1594. Here, an early church building and the tomb of a historically known individual come together in a clearly defined sacred setting.

Another local landmark is the astronomical clock of Hybe. It was created by the clockmaker Ján Pavella and features a procession of twelve figures in whom older residents of Hybe recognize their ancestors. Chrobákov dom houses a workshop for baking gingerbread. In addition to the architectural heritage, local memory and craftsmanship thus appear as independent elements.

Winter

There are groomed cross-country ski trails in the sub-Tatra landscape of Hybe. Cross-country skiing is therefore represented as a specific winter activity in the town's landscape.

Hybická tiesňava is a protected area in the cadastral territory of Hybe, covering an area of 556.76 hectares and comprising protection levels 2, 3 and 5.
