Maluzina: Nature, Cave and Mining History

Malužinská Cave above Malužiná lies on the left side of the Bocianska dolina valley and was formed in dolomite rock. It is approximately 328 metres long, 250 metres of which are open to the public. The visit begins with an approximately ten-minute uphill walk, followed by a guided underground tour with helmets and headlamps.

Nature

Malužiná lies in the eastern part of the Liptovská kotlina basin, in a mountainous area on the northern slopes of the Low Tatras. To the west of Malužiná lies the Ohnište plateau, which is a national nature reserve. Thus, in addition to the cave interior, the area around the town includes a mountain landscape and a designated protected area.

History

Malužiná was established in the second half of the 18th century as a mining settlement around a copper hammer mill built in 1771. From the 18th century until 1885, a glassworks operated in Malužiná. The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Malužiná dates from 1816. The former inn with a bowling alley, dating from the early 19th century, is a national cultural monument.

Culture

In the main building of Speleocamping Malužiná, directly next to the reception, there is an exhibition about mining and speleology. It displays miners’ lamps, minerals and ores extracted from mines. The exhibition also offers a guided tour lasting approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Visiting

Tickets for the cave, the adit or the exhibition can be purchased at the reception of Speleocamping at Malužiná 21. Visitor parking spaces are located in front of the buffet at Malužiná 158, about 10 metres from the reception. The accessible adit “Baňa Zubaustollen” is located at the beginning of the Malužinská dolina valley. From the reception of Speleocamping to the “Baňa Zubaustollen” adit in the Malužinská dolina valley, it is just under 2 kilometres on foot. Advance reservation by telephone or email is recommended for visiting the “Baňa Zubaustollen” adit.

Routes

The “Chorupné cez Malužinský Tajch” route follows forest paths through the Malužinská dolina valley to Malužinský Tajch and onward to Chorupné before returning to Malužiná.
