Nature

Vazec first draws attention to Važecká Cave: 235 m of the route are open to the public. The cave is one of Slovakia’s national natural monuments and an important paleontological site for cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) bones. Važec therefore focuses both on the publicly accessible cave route and on the site’s natural-historical significance.

Folk culture

The Múzeum ľudovej kultúry Važec is located in one of the oldest masonry houses in Važec. It presents everyday life and living conditions, traditional clothing, agricultural work, folk crafts, and the customs and traditions of Važec’s inhabitants. The museum also features a model of Važec showing what the village looked like before it was destroyed by fire. An exhibit from 1781 shows its original decoration and the bride’s name.

The house of Jan Hála is also part of the area’s historical setting. It is a national cultural monument, was built in 1923, and was the home of the painter Jan Hála when he came to Važec.

Tradition

The Svätodušný chorovod Omilienci is an archaic ritual procession involving dancing and singing, held every Whit Sunday in Važec. Women who wear traditional dress and wish to sing can take part in the Omilienci procession. Today’s procession begins at the upper end of Važec below the cemetery and ends in the square in front of the church with a performance and the symbolic opening of springs.

Historic places

In the Church of Klaňania sa troch kráľov in Važec, a Gothic portal leads from the nave into the adjoining sacristy, which now serves as a confessional. It is said to have come from the former church in Šoldov.

The German war cemetery near Važec lies outside the municipality between Važec and Tatranská Štrba. The access route is signposted and leads to a large parking area at the site. The site can be explored via a circular path through eight cemeteries.

In the centre

In the centre of Važec, a NabiBajk charging station for e-bikes is available in the car park in front of the local market, not far from the church.
