Veterná Poruba: Hotels, Prayer House and Nordic Walking Loop

Veterná Poruba lies on the ridge of Mount Štefanka in the central part of the Liptov Basin at an elevation of 820 metres. The peaks of the Western Tatras rise to the north of the village. The village is also distinguished by an evangelical prayer house, a historic bell tower and a theatre tradition that continues to the present day.

Culture and History

The evangelical prayer house was built in 1873 on the site of a smaller wooden prayer house dating from 1862. In 1892, it received an organ from the evangelical church in Jasenová. The organ from that church is still in use today following its restoration.

The bell tower is considered the oldest surviving building in Veterná Poruba. It was built in 1853 after the great fire of 1850. The evangelical prayer house also houses a wooden statue of an archangel from the original church in Svätý Štefan.

The evangelical prayer house thus brings together various historical connections of the village: its origins on the site of an earlier wooden prayer house, the organ from Jasenová and the statue of the archangel originating from Svätý Štefan. The bell tower complements this ensemble as a separate surviving structure from the period after the fire of 1850.

Amateur theatre is also part of the history of Veterná Poruba. It has a tradition of more than one hundred years. The first amateur theatre performance took place in 1918 under the title “Eulália sa chce vydávať”; the author of the play is unknown. The theatre tradition continues to the present day.
