A 15-metre-high wooden observation tower in Zákamenné offers views of Babia Hora, Pilsko, Oravská Magura and the Western Tatras.

Landscape

Zákamenné lies in the Podbeskydská brázda and the Zákamenné Basin. The basin was formed by the erosion caused by the Klinianka and Zásihľanka streams. Its geographical location can therefore be understood through both the landform and the watercourses.

Trails and views

A green-marked educational trail leads from the centre of Zákamenné via the local Calvary to the observation tower. The access route to the Zákamenné observation tower is 3 km long and has an elevation gain of 150 metres. The route is specifically defined by its starting point, the green markings, its length and the difference in elevation. The annual winter and summer crossing over Zákamenský grúň leads to the summit of Úšust.

Culture

The Zákamenné Calvary was built in 1862. It consists of fourteen Stations of the Cross, a larger central chapel with a horseshoe-shaped floor plan and two smaller chapels with horseshoe-shaped floor plans. The horseshoe-shaped floor plan is common to the chapels, while the complex comprises one larger central chapel and two smaller chapels. An indulgence Mass is celebrated at the Zákamenné Calvary every year on 15 August. The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the Neo-Romanesque style.

Tradition

The heritage room in the Zákamenné municipal office displays historical objects used by the ancestors of local residents. Zákamenné men's and women's folk costumes are also displayed there. Part of the exhibition focuses on flax cultivation, linen production and the production of linseed oil, for which Zákamenné was known. Thus, objects, clothing and the processing of flax into linen and linseed oil are brought together in the same room.

Nature

Zákamenné lies in the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area. At the game park in Zákamenné, visitors can observe roe deer from close up. The game park is home to red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and mouflon. Animal observation therefore ranges from seeing roe deer at close quarters to viewing an enclosure containing red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and mouflon. In Zákamenné, visitors can observe trout farming and catch fresh fish.
