Liptovské Revúce lies in the Revúcka Valley, which runs from north to south and forms the boundary between the Low Tatras and the Great Fatra. The Revúca River also connects the landscape: it rises below Krížna, flows through the Revúcka Valley and joins the Váh in Ružomberok. Here, distinctive mountain landscapes, a river valley and a long-established settlement history come together.
Nature
One of the area’s special natural features is Borišov. This 450-hectare state nature reserve protects communities in up to four forest vegetation zones. Borišov is also associated with an annual tradition: the traditional ascent of the mountain takes place every year on 30 December. From Ploská, a trail leads to Chata pod Borišovom, a mountain hut open year-round at a junction of several marked hiking trails.
In the Teplá Valley, within the cadastral territory of Liptovské Revúce, lies Prielom Teplého potoka, which has been protected as a natural monument since 1984. The gorge section is approximately 180 metres long and up to 20 metres deep. Its listed landscape features include karst relief, travertine and erosional forms created by the river. The protected area also includes the 2.4-metre-high lower waterfall of the Teplý potok. Prielom Teplého potoka can be reached from the Teplé forestry lodge via a yellow-marked hiking trail.
Hiking
The Čierny Kameň Educational Trail begins in Stredná in Liptovské Revúce and ends in Vyšná near Konštrukta. Along its route, it passes through the NPR Čierny kameň nature reserve and the Ploská saddle. The educational trail is 9.5 kilometres long, takes approximately five hours and includes eight information boards or stations. It is self-guided, can be walked in both directions and is suitable as a loop trail in both summer and winter. Access is possible from the SAD bus stop Liptovské Revúce, Stredná–požiarna zbrojnica.
Another designated connection leads from Liptovské Revúce (Výšné) to Krížna. The route is 15 kilometres long and takes six hours. It is classified as a moderately difficult alpine hike and as a ski touring route. For ski touring, it is designated for the period from 15 December to 30 April; avalanche safety equipment is specified as necessary gear.
The Ferrata Dve veže was also opened in Záhorovo in Liptovské Revúce. It runs as a secured route through challenging mountain terrain and features fixed safety cables and iron steps.
Culture
Vyšná Revúca is the oldest part of the municipality and preserves its best-preserved folk architecture. This includes wooden houses dating from 1800 to 1870 and an 18th-century chapel. The shepherding-based folk culture of Liptovské Revúce is known as Ovenálie and has remained almost unchanged to this day.
The church “Kostol Očisťovania Panny Márie” is also part of the local architectural and artistic history. It was built in 1819 in the Baroque Classicist style on the site of an older wooden church dating from 1694. Inside, it features a wall painting from 1912–1913 by Jozef Hanula and a Classicist high altar dating from around 1820. A characteristic embroidery tradition of Liptovské Revúce is the sewn lace, or cutwork embroidery, known as “garatová ruža”.
Local Tradition
Revúcke halušky is a 28-year-old local tradition. It includes craft markets, folklore, music, regional food and children’s activities. The event also features a competition in cooking and eating bryndza halušky.
