Valaská Dubová: Mountain Trails, Church History and Jánošíkova krčma

Nature

In good visibility, Veľký Choč offers panoramic views of all the surrounding higher mountain ranges of the Western Carpathians. The blue-marked ascent from Valaská Dubová leads via Soliská to Poľana, takes about 2.5 hours and continues towards Veľký Choč.

The trail from Valaská Dubová to Stredná Poľana is designated as Route 2700, Part 1, and is marked blue. This trail ascends approximately 600 metres and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. It runs through the Chočské vrchy Special Protection Area. Its starting point is at the “Valaská Dubová,,OcÚ” bus stop; regional buses from Ružomberok travel to the start. The trail is accessible year-round.

For personal day planning, duration, elevation gain and destination can be considered separately. The approximate times are suitable as a time frame, not as a minute-by-minute guideline. This makes it possible to distinguish the shorter ascent via Soliská and Poľana, taking about two and a half hours, from the trail to Stredná Poľana based on destination, duration and elevation gain.

History

The present-day Church of Saint Michael the Archangel was built after the previous church was demolished in 1860 and consecrated in 1866. Its interior paintings date from 1904 and were created by Jozef Hanula. Next to the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel stands a Lourdes chapel, which was built to mark the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes.

The parish of Valaská Dubová is first mentioned in a record from 1332–1337. Jánošíkova krčma is a masonry building erected on the site of an older wooden inn.

Activities

Every year, on the last day of the year, a traditional New Year's Eve ascent to the summit of Veľký Choč takes place from Valaská Dubová. A green-marked cycling route also passes through Valaská Dubová.

Southwest of Valaská Dubová, above the main road from Ružomberok to Dolný Kubín, there is a swing suspended from trees, offering views of the surroundings of Valaská Dubová. It can be reached from the cemetery via a path in about 15 minutes.

The combination of a seasonally fixed event, a year-round accessible trail and a cycling route can be viewed as different temporal and sporting comparison axes. The New Year's Eve ascent is tied to the last day of the year, while the described trail to Stredná Poľana is accessible year-round and the cycling route adds another marked form of activity in the village.
