Margecany is associated with the Margeciansky Tunnel and a clearly dated railway history: it was built in 1872 during the construction of the single-track Košice–Bohumín railway and was entered into the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic as a technical monument on 22 March 1985. The tunnel is passable for cars, cyclists and pedestrians.

History and culture

The Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

The folklore ensemble Folklórny súbor Jadlovec was founded in 1976 as a women’s singing group and was soon expanded to include music and dance sections. The settlement of Rolova Huta by German settlers began in 1597 for the smelting of copper ores. Both references lead to different chapters in the local history of culture and settlement.

Margecany lies on railway line No. 180, which connects Košice, Žilina and Bratislava.

Nature and routes

The excursion “From Margecany through the tunnel along the Ružín” has Margecany railway station as a suitable starting point. On this excursion, a gravel path runs immediately above the Ružín Reservoir and follows its bays.

Along the northern shore of the Ružín Reservoir, an asphalt path leads from Margecany via Počkaj Beach and Rolova Huta to the old Margeciansky Tunnel. It features wooden sculptures and educational panels and is designed as a fairytale trail. The route thus connects several named points with a deliberately designed trail layout.

A boat and pedal boat rental service is available at Počkaj Beach in Margecany. The reservoir is also used for recreational purposes.

Local life

Since 2011, FSk Jadlovec has organized the Margecianske fajnoty event together with the municipality of Margecany. At Margecianske fajnoty, invited groups prepare food in front of visitors and offer it for sale.

Fajnot Park has benches, a chess table and wooden sculptures.

When checking a hotel in Margecany, look at the respective offer pages for the exact location, type of accommodation and stated occupancy. You can also compare the included services, price components, and booking and cancellation conditions before booking. Especially when comparing prices with a budget in mind, it helps to examine the total amount through its individual components and to match the occupancy with your own travel group. What matters is what is stated in the specific offer; any possible additional costs should also be identifiable there as part of the price. This allows you to compare the options objectively. For your own budgeting, it is also important to check whether the stated price applies per night, per stay or to the entire occupancy, and whether the number of people travelling with you is clearly taken into account in the offer; these details can be checked directly on the respective offer page.
