Veľaty: Churches, Iconostasis and Slaná studňa

Veľaty offers a cultural and historical perspective through its Greek Catholic church: its iconostasis was installed in 1934 and created by the woodcarver Anton Helfer; in 2005, it was added to the list of cultural monuments.

Culture

The Greek Catholic church also has a ribbed vault made of boards covered with canvas. A church already stood on the site of the Roman Catholic Church of Mena Panny Márie in 1620. The restored church was consecrated on 11 September 1870. The Roman Catholic Church of Mena Panny Márie contains a commemorative plaque bearing the name Aladár Andrássy, the years 1890–1895 and the family coat of arms. The small bell of the Roman Catholic Church of Mena Panny Márie, dating from 1900, is the second-oldest surviving bell in the surrounding area. The churches offer different cultural and historical perspectives through their furnishings, building history, family memorial and bell.

Nature

Geographically, Veľaty lies in the southwestern part of the Eastern Slovak Lowland, north of the Zemplín Mountains. The landscape around Veľaty includes arable land, forests, orchards, gardens, meadows and vineyards. In the centre of Veľaty, a well-maintained small park invites visitors to take a walk. A 150-year-old sycamore maple is the surviving remnant of the former park of the Andrássy family in Veľaty; its crown has a diameter of 29 metres. History

Slaná studňa lies on the southwestern edge of Veľaty, about 100 metres southeast of the railway line. The historic Slaná studňa site was restored and made accessible in 2014. The present-day Slaná studňa area has an access path, a shelter with seating and a wooden footbridge over the freely flowing water. At Slaná studňa, there was a local spa at the end of the 19th century, where salty, alkaline iodine water was used to treat inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and thyroid diseases. At Slaná studňa, location, structural elements and historical use represent three different levels of consideration.
