Brzotín – Nature, Views and Historic Buildings

Brzotín can be viewed through both its landscape and its buildings. Its cadastral area extends across two important geomorphological units: the Rožňavská kotlina and Slovenský kras. The village is home to historic manor houses and the late Baroque Kostol sv. Anny church, while the landscape is shaped by the Silická planina rock massif, the NPR Brzotínske skaly nature reserve, standing waters and the Slaná River.

Nature

The ruins of Hrad Brzotín lie on the wooded slope of the Silická planina rock massif in the NPR Brzotínske skaly nature reserve, on the right bank of the Slaná River. A visible ditch has been preserved from the site. Brzotínska skala is part of the NPR Brzotínske skaly National Nature Reserve, which was designated in 1984. The viewpoint at Brzotínska skala has been open to tourists since 2017.

From this viewpoint, there is a view in a southwesterly direction into the dramatic canyon of the Slaná River. The Brzotínske rybníky ponds are also located in Slovenský kras. They are among the largest standing waters in the area by surface area.

Cycling Route

A blue cycling tourism route runs through Brzotín. It allows visitors to explore the surrounding natural and cultural sights by bicycle. Alongside the rock and water landscapes, this provides a specifically designated way in the village to connect these destinations on two wheels.

Culture

In the centre of Brzotín stands the Mariášiovcov Manor House, also known as Biely kaštieľ or Máriássyho kaštieľ. It dates from 1837 and currently serves as the seat of the administration of Slovenský kras National Park. Remains of a historic park have been preserved in the courtyard area and supplemented with new plantings.

A Baroque manor house in Brzotín was built around 1729. The two-storey, two-wing Baroque building has a distinctive central avant-corps, a balcony on the main façade and two side avant-corps. Alongside its date of construction, these architectural features give the building a clearly recognisable external character.

The Kostol sv. Anny church in Brzotín was built between 1798 and 1803 and is late Baroque. Its high altar is a Louis XVI altar from the end of the 18th century and contains a new image of Saint Anne from the 20th century. The church is in very good condition and serves its religious purpose.
