Dlhá Ves: Hotels between Karst Landscape and Culture

Dlhá Ves lies on the southwestern edge of the limestone Silická planina, in the enclosed Dlhoveská dolina valley and in the southern part of Slovak Karst National Park. The village's history includes the Evangelical church with its old organ and the Vidiecky dom.

Nature

Domica Cave is located in the cadastral area of Kečovo, about 7 km from Dlhá Ves, and has been open to the public since 1932. Since 1985, the “Domica and Surroundings” educational trail, with five information panels, has been located in the area around the cave. They cover the Slovak Karst, Domica Cave, fauna and flora, geology and geomorphology, and agriculture. Domické škrapy is also located nearby; it has been a national nature reserve with thermophilous vegetation since 1973. The small karst lake Smradľavé jazierko, with an area of approximately 0.33 ha, is also located in the cadastral area of Dlhá Ves.

Culture and History

The Evangelical church in Dlhá Ves was built in 1792, and its tower was added in 1840. The church has a Classicist altar dating from 1802. Its organ dates from 1795 and was created by Fr. Ed. Petznik; it is a national cultural monument.

The Vidiecky dom is a cultural monument and an example of traditional rural architecture. It comprises three rooms—a vestibule, a kitchen and a room—which are furnished with old furniture and objects from the former everyday life of the local population. The vestibule displays objects used in fieldwork and in work with domestic animals. The kitchen contains looms on which former residents made textiles. The collection continues to be expanded with objects, old documents and photographs of residents.

Dlhá Ves has also preserved the traditional crafts of charcoal burning and glass painting. Several traditional Gemer farmhouses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been preserved on the Silická planina. Cultural and community events take place there regularly.

Routes and Activities

A second-class road runs through Dlhá Ves to Domica Cave and the international Domica–Aggtelek border crossing into Hungary; the border crossing is 3 km away. The “Jaskyňa Domica – Silická planina” cycling route begins at the large car park by the church tower in the centre of Dlhá Ves and connects to the red cycle route markings. It then follows Road 587 through Dlhá Ves to Domica Cave.

A marked green hiking trail from Bretka runs through the cadastral area of Dlhá Ves and ends on the Silická planina. In addition to the park, the sports field is used year-round: in summer for football and other games, and in winter, since 1989, as an ice rink. An ice carnival is held in Dlhá Ves every year.
