Discover Rožňava

Rožňava is one of the centres of the Gothic Route in Gemer. The historic centre combines a spacious square with several adjoining streets.

Historic Centre

The square is considered the largest of its kind in Slovakia. Its current layout emerged approximately towards the end of the 15th century.

Watchtower, Cathedral and Calvary

The Rožňava watchtower is a Renaissance tower built between 1643 and 1654. Tourists can visit it without a guide during the opening hours of the tourist information office. From its gallery, there is a view of all the monuments in the historic centre, the Calvary, the city and the Rožňava Basin.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Rožňava is a medieval Gothic sacred building from the late 13th century, whose construction was completed in 1304. It is the oldest and most valuable cultural monument in Rožňava. The cathedral houses a panel painting considered the oldest depiction of mining on an altarpiece in Central Europe.

The Rožňava Calvary is one of the oldest Calvary complexes in Slovakia and is also the oldest monument of its kind in the Gemer region. The walk from Rožňava Town Hall at Miners' Square to the Rožňava Calvary is considered easy, is less than two kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 120 metres.

Mining and Regional History

The Mining Museum in Rožňava is a regional-history district museum specialising in the mining and metallurgical industries of Gemer. It has five independent permanent exhibition units. The exhibitions cover the mining and metallurgical industries of Gemer, the age of steam, mining workplaces, and the nature of the Slovak Karst and the adjacent areas. The courtyard contains mining machinery and a mine railway.

The sights differ significantly in their form: the centre focuses on the large square with its adjoining streets, the watchtower on architectural history and views, while the cathedral and Calvary represent sacred heritage. The museum complements these historic sites with exhibitions on regional economic and natural history.

For day planning, the attractions can be compared by time required and focus. The walk to the Calvary combines a short route with a clearly stated elevation difference; the watchtower is subject to the opening hours of the tourist information office, and the museum organises its content into five permanent units. This keeps the differences between the walk, the viewpoint, the sacred building and the exhibition clear.
