Hrkovce: Hotels amid history and the Ipeľ landscape

History

The first written mention of Hrkovce dates back to 1156. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Hrkovce is a Baroque-Classical church built in 1770. It survived the fire of 29 July 1808, in which Hrkovce was almost completely destroyed. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The Chapel of the Most Holy Redeemer in Hrkovce dates from 1900.

Landscape

Hrkovce lies on the northern bank of the Ipeľ River. The Krupinka stream forms the eastern boundary of Hrkovce. The Štiavnička stream forms its western boundary. Hrkovce is located in the Ipeľská pahorkatina at an elevation of 125 to 205 metres above sea level. The valley near Hrkovce is less than 3 kilometres wide between two mountain ranges. To a limited extent, Hrkovce has water management focused on sport fishing, water protection and environmental protection.

Culture and Local Life

The agricultural cooperative of Hrkovce manages 25 hectares of vineyards. There are wine cellars in the vineyards of Hrkovce. A statue of Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers, holding a bunch of grapes stands in these vineyards.

The summer festivities of Hrkovce have been held annually since 1999. They include an annual football tournament between bachelors and married men at the local football pitch. Baňa is a natural amphitheatre in the vineyards of Hrkovce that is used for community entertainment during the summer festivities. At the entrance to Hrkovce, there is a recreation park with various climbing frames for children and benches for resting.

Transport

Hrkovce has a railway stop on the Šahy–Zvolen railway line. The Šahy–Zvolen railway line passing through Hrkovce was built in 1899. Hrkovce also has a bus stop with services towards Šahy–Levice–Nitra–Bratislava and Šahy–Dudince–Zvolen–Banská Bystrica.
