Kalná nad Hronom – Churches, Fortifications and the Hron Floodplain

Kalná nad Hronom combines its location in the Hron floodplain with archaeological evidence and buildings from many centuries. Between bodies of water, loess landscapes, churches and places for active recreation, a multifaceted picture of this Slovak municipality emerges.

Landscape

Kalná nad Hronom lies in the Danubian Lowland, in the right-bank floodplain of the Hron River. The municipal area is flat to slightly hilly and is characterized by Tertiary deposits covered by a thick loess layer. In the cadastral territories of Kalná and Kalnica, bodies of water occupy a significant part of the area. The economically important Hron River flows along the eastern boundary of both cadastral territories.

Culture and History

The history of the settlement reaches far back. In Kalná nad Hronom, two prehistoric fortifications have been preserved as remnants from the Roman era; they are associated with the former border area of the Quadi in the direction of the Iazyges. Archaeological finds also attest to an Eneolithic settlement with fluted pottery. Settlements from the Hallstatt period, the La Tène period and the Roman-barbarian period have likewise been archaeologically documented. A grave from the Migration Period was also found in the municipal area; it dates to the 4th or 5th century.

Kalná nad Hronom was first mentioned in 1209 under the name „villa Kalon“. The town's cultural and historical monuments include a Reformed Classicist church dating from 1806. The Church of St. Peter and Paul was originally built in 1733 in the Baroque style and given a new Late Classicist-Romantic façade in 1866. It is a single-nave church with a semicircular presbytery and a three-storey tower projecting from the front.

Inside the Church of St. Peter and Paul are a Rococo pulpit with pink festoons from the mid-18th century and a stone Rococo baptismal font in the shape of a shell, with the Lamb of God on its lid, from the second half of the 18th century. Another site connected with the local history is Dom bojovej slávy in Kalná nad Hronom, a military history gallery with a tank. From April to October, Dom bojovej slávy is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 14:00 to 18:00; it is closed on Mondays.

The local events calendar also draws on traditional themes: Kalná nad Hronom hosts numerous cultural events connected with religious holidays, local traditions and events associated with agriculture.

Leisure and Exercise

Ostrov pohybu is a seven-hectare island almost one kilometre long, intended for active recreation and relaxation. The island is suitable for runners, cyclists and families with children. Kalná nad Hronom also offers sports and recreational facilities with a wellness area, a year-round recreational pool and a fitness centre.

The railway connection is also part of the local landscape and helps with spatial orientation: the Nové Zámky–Zvolen railway line passes through Kalná nad Hronom.
