In Lewenz, sites of cultural and historical significance, the offerings of the Tekov Museum, winegrowing and designated natural areas exist side by side. The town and its surroundings reveal different facets that can be explored through specific buildings, landscapes, educational trails, venues and historically contextualized remains.

Culture and History

The archaeology exhibition at the Tekov Museum covers social development from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages in the museum’s area of activity. It includes the Želiezovce, Maďarovce and Čaka cultures, whose names derive from archaeological sites in the Levice District. The Tekov Museum also offers exhibitions, classical music concerts and lectures. Events organized by the museum include Museum and Gallery Night and Museum Week.

The Church of the Holy Archangel Michael was built by the Esterházy family between 1773 and 1780 after a major town fire. Dobó Manor is a two-storey Renaissance fortified manor house built in the second half of the 16th century. Levická Kalvária comprises 14 Stations of the Cross chapels and the restored remains of a historic church from the 18th century. The first synagogue in Levice was built in 1853 or 1854.

Nature and Landscape

The Levické rybníky protected area on the Perec stream was designated in 1974. It covers 91.83 hectares and directly borders the built-up area of Levice. At Levické rybníky, there is a recreation zone established in 2013, as well as information boards about the area’s origins and importance and its flora and fauna.

The Horšianska dolina is a national nature reserve in which protection levels 3 and 4 apply. Part of the area is of European importance.

Winegrowing and Trails

In the former Schoeller manor cellars beneath the Kalvária, wines from local producers can be tasted by prior arrangement. More than 70 hectares of vineyards and around 250 hajloks, or wine cottages, are located on Krížny vrch. The educational trail in the Krížny vrch winegrowing area in Levice runs between the hajloks, the wine cottages found there.

The educational trail on Levická Kalvária provides information about the site’s history, flora and fauna. It includes a panoramic information board with views of the area around Levice. In favorable weather, the observation tower on Levická Kalvária is accessible on Sundays and public holidays from May to October, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Leisure

The Margita–Ilona leisure facility is located 6 km from Levice in the direction of Šahy, in the Kalinčiakovo district. It includes an outdoor swimming pool with four pools as well as sports fields.
