Ipeľské Úľany – History, Culture and Nature
Ipeľské Úľany has been documented in writing since 1259 under the name Fedemes. The village lies on the southwestern edge of the Krupinská výšina and is situated in the headwaters of the Olvár stream, a tributary of the Ipeľ. Thus, this Slovak village combines an early documented history with a clearly defined landscape.
Nature
The geographical location can also be seen south of the municipality. There are drier meadows and woodland edges there at around 370 metres above sea level. This elevation should be understood as an approximate figure. Together with the Olvár headwaters and the edge of the Krupinská výšina, this creates a landscape whose individual areas display different natural characteristics, without implying a uniform terrain form for the entire village.
History
The history of Ipeľské Úľany also includes a profound rupture: the settlement was destroyed by the Turks in the mid-16th century. After 1552, the inhabitants founded a new settlement elsewhere within the municipal territory. A Romanesque church was remodelled in the 15th century. Historically, viticulture was also one of the activities of the inhabitants of Ipeľské Úľany. This chronological sequence mentions both the destruction of the former settlement and the subsequent refoundation and remodelling of the church.
Culture
The Baroque Church of the Holy Archangel Michael in Ipeľské Úľany, dating from 1757, is one of the historic buildings. The ruins of a Romanesque church from the 13th century have also been preserved. The Csemadok organisation contributes to maintaining traditions in Ipeľské Úľany and organises various cultural and social events.
The renovated cultural centre is also one of the municipality’s cultural venues. It has tables that are also available to visitors during presentations on the history, sport and traditional culture of the municipality. In this way, these topics are addressed in a public setting that encompasses local history as well as sporting and traditional content.
Community Life
The annual calendar includes several festive occasions. In September, Ipeľské Úľany celebrates the community festival dedicated to Saint Michael. Christmas community celebrations take place in December. The local facilities for children include a playground, which is visited by preschool- and school-age children accompanied by their parents.
Getting Around
For cyclists, the Hrušov Circuit 2594 cycling route passes through Ipeľské Úľany. In addition, the Šahy–Rybárik–Vrabčia Hora–Ipeľské Úľany route is suitable for MTB and trekking bikes. Both statements refer to specifically named routes and also distinguish between a route that passes through the village and a route suitable for particular types of bicycles.
