Žemberovce: Nature Trail, Churches and Cultural Heritage

Žemberovce lies at the transition between the northern part of the Ipeľská pahorkatina upland and the Štiavnické vrchy. Churches and memorial sites complement the nature-related features along the Horšianska dolina Nature Trail.

Nature

The Natura 2000 site SKUEV0870 covers the cadastral area of Dolné Žemberovce. The northern section of the Horšianska dolina Nature Trail runs through the Horšianska dolina National Nature Reserve. The entire trail is 5.8 kilometres long and can be completed in approximately 2 to 2.5 hours; it is accordingly classified as a moderately difficult route.

Along the trail, the Sikenica must be crossed at a signposted ford. When water levels are high, during the snowmelt period or after heavy rainfall, passage through the valley is not permitted. A viewpoint along the trail offers a unique view of a meander of the Sikenica and displays andesite pyroclastics. For the northern section of the trail, it is recommended to walk from Žemberovce to Horša.

Culture

Žemberovce Manor is a Classicist mansion with Neo-Romanesque alterations. It was renovated in 1812 and extended with an addition at the end of the 19th century. Thus, the same building combines a Classicist basic form with a later Neo-Romanesque modification.

Local memorial heritage includes the birthplace of Major Daniel Gonda, a listed memorial building with a commemorative plaque, as well as the grave of Major Daniel Gonda with a gravestone, which is recorded as protected cultural heritage in Žemberovce. The Roman Catholic Church of Kostol Mena Panny Márie is a Baroque church built in 1754.

The Evangelical church in Žemberovce was built in 1886 in the traditional Classicist style of Josephine churches. It is a single-nave building with a polygonal chancel, sacristy and a projecting tower.

History

Annual traditions in Žemberovce include a Fašiangy procession. Traditional activities in Žemberovce included viticulture, weaving, basketry and the production of wooden goods. At the Fašiangy celebration on 5 March 2011, the programme included a home slaughter held in front of the health centre and in the rooms of the seniors’ club, as well as the traditional burial of the double bass at the cultural centre.
