Pohronský Ruskov – Hotel, Archaeology and Military Museum on the Hron

Pohronský Ruskov is a significant archaeological site with settlement finds from the Neolithic period associated with the Linear Pottery culture, the Slovak Painted Pottery culture and the Lengyel culture.

Nature

Geographically, Pohronský Ruskov lies in the eastern part of the Danubian Lowland on a low river terrace on the right bank of the Hron. The Hron flows through the cadastral area of Pohronský Ruskov for a length of 3 km. Along the Hron, remnants of willow-poplar floodplain forests have been preserved.

Culture

The archaeological finds in Pohronský Ruskov also include settlement remains from the Slavic period and from the Roman-Barbarian cultural sphere. Archaeological finds from the Hallstatt and La Tène periods, as well as a burial ground, have also been documented.

The present-day Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built from 1953 to 1962 after the original church had been destroyed by retreating German troops. Its tower was added in 2003. As a filial church, it belongs to the parish of Hronovce. Remains of the original church bell form part of the memorial to the victims of the Second World War.

History

The Pohronský Ruskov sugar factory was founded in 1893 and expanded, among other things, with a large mill. The former sugar factory buildings are examples of industrial architecture from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A narrow-gauge railway connected the sugar factory complex with the surrounding manors and farms.

Visit

At the Military Historical Museum Pohronský Ruskov, visitors can see various dioramas, authentic images, weapons and military equipment. A functioning Soviet T34/85 tank is also on display there. The collection comprises around 300 weapons. The museum can be visited daily by prior telephone arrangement. Every August, the Military Historical Museum Pohronský Ruskov organizes the South Wind military show in memory of the soldiers who fell in the military conflicts on the banks of the Hron.
