Nový Tekov on the Hron: Churches, History and Horses

Nový Tekov lies on the right-bank floodplain of the Hron River. The village combines this setting with churches, archaeological traces and horse-related activities. In Nový Tekov, the landscape, local history and regional culture come together.

Location and Nature

The former ferry connected Nový Tekov across the Hron with Starý Tekov. It was replaced by a modern single-lane bridge. At Ranč u Bobiho, visitors can enjoy carriage or wagon rides that follow the Hron and return through Nový Tekov to the ranch grounds. Riding lessons for beginners and slightly more advanced riders are also offered there year-round. Horse rides along the Hron River are presented as an opportunity to get to know the local flora and fauna.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Charles in Nový Tekov is a Baroque-Classical church dating from 1811. The Reformed Church in Nový Tekov was built in the Classical style in 1791. It contains a red-marble communion table from 1821 and a Classical red-marble pulpit from 1829. The Reformed Church was restored after a fire in 1850.

History

Among the oldest archaeological finds in Nový Tekov is a Roman-barbarian settlement dating from the 8th to the 9th century. Archaeological finds in the village also include a Slavic inhumation grave from the 9th century. Several original 19th-century houses with farm buildings have been preserved in the Marušová district.

The Nový Tekov Memorial Room is located in the premises of the former one-class school. It was opened to mark the 700th anniversary of the municipality’s first written mention. The Memorial Room can be visited on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; visits for organized groups can be arranged in advance. The cemetery in Nový Tekov is also noteworthy for its old gravestones.

The Nový Tekov stud farm was founded in 1861 to breed draft and sport horses. The historic stud farm offered horse rides, carriage rides and rides in a trotting sulky. Today, the activities listed in the village include riding lessons, horse rides and wagon rides at Ranč u Bobiho.

Wine and Events

For May 22, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., OZ Veselí Tekovskí Vinári and the Municipality of Nový Tekov invited people to a gathering for the Feast of Saint Urban at the municipal hajlok, featuring gastronomic specialties, music, singing and wine, as well as the blessing of the Nový Tekov vineyards. For February 6, 2026, a presentation of local wines and the wines of its members was announced following the 12th general meeting of OZ Veselí Tekovskí Vinári.
