Šarovce on the Hron – Cultural History and Hotels

The history of Šarovce dates back to prehistoric times. Evidence of intensive settlement by the Baden culture around 3000 BC includes numerous ceramic fragments. The archaeological finds also include two bronze daggers discovered in cultural pits. During the La Tène period, from 450 BC until the beginning of our era, a spacious Celtic farmstead stood in the area of present-day Šarovce.

Culture

Religious buildings continue the history of the village into later periods. The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Guardian Angels in Veľké Šarovce is a Classicist building erected on the site of an older early Gothic church dating from the 13th century. The Reformed Church in Malé Šarovce was built in 1780 as a toleration church without a tower, enlarged in 1832 and given its tower in 1899.

The Dedinské múzeum Šarovce presents archaeological, ethnographic and current exhibitions of the municipality. Visits to the Dedinské múzeum Šarovce can be arranged with Alžbeta Boháčová at 036/7792056. Since 2005, Csemadok has organised the cultural event “Turičné stretnutie” every year in May.

A bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius was unveiled in Šarovce on 19 November 2014. The history of the village also includes the original Chapel of Saint Donáth: it had stood for a long time on the road leading out towards Želiezovce, on the right-hand side of the road, and was demolished. A site for a chapel was subsequently selected on the right side of the road near the granary in the direction of Želiezovce.

Nature

Šarovce lies on the right bank of the Hron. The VN Šarovce fishing district covers a 19.8-hectare water area near Šarovce and extends from MVE Šarovce to the Tekovské Lužany–Demandice road bridge. Fishing is prohibited year-round at the functional structures of the MVE Šarovce facility.

Routes

Via road I/76, Šarovce is connected to the national transport network from Štúrovo through Kalná nad Hronom (Levice) to Hronský Beňadik. In the immediate vicinity of the municipality, this road intersects with road I/75 from Nové Zámky to Veľký Krtíš.

The Pohronská cyklomagistrála is suitable for mountain bikes and e-bikes.
