Lok: Hron Terraces, Churches and the MERIDIEM 2122 MTB Route

Lok combines a clearly structured landscape with local history, sacred buildings and a regional cycling route. The town lies on the eastern slopes of the Pohronská pahorkatina and on the terraces of the Hron. Its predominantly flat to hilly, deforested landscape consists of Tertiary deposits covered by loess and loess loam.

History

The written history of Lok dates back to the Middle Ages: in 1286, the town was first mentioned under the name Luk. In 1388, Lok became part of the estate of Levice Castle by order of King Sigismund. After acquiring the large estate in 1867, Count Gustáv Schöller had a distillery, farm buildings and residential houses built in Lok.

The regional railway connection is also part of the town's history. The Levice–Šurany railway line was built in 1913–1914 and received a station in Lok. Thus, the station is connected to a line whose construction took place between 1913 and 1914.

Churches

The Reformed Church in Lok was built in 1783. Its tower was added in 1844 and heightened in 1873. The building is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose.

The Church of All Saints originated as an 18th-century chapel that was expanded into a church and restored in 1949. It too is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose. Its inventory includes a silver pacificale dating from around 1720. Thus, the site brings together architectural history and a clearly older sacred furnishing.

Cycling

The regional MERIDIEM 2122 MTB route passes through Lok and is classified as a moderately difficult sports route. Its course includes asphalt, paved paths, dirt roads and forest roads.
